Welcome to our classroom!
Oak Tree School
Welcome!
My name is Dawn Marie Kappus. From 2001-2008, I taught first grade at Barclay Brook Elementary School, which is a short drive from Oak Tree School. First grade is full of learning adventures in reading, writing, math, science, and the list just keeps going! After completing my masters degree in reading and literacy, I obtained my Reading Specialist certificate. Due to my love of reading, I began a new adventure.... From 2008-2011 I enjoyed working as the Reading Specialist and Basic Skills teacher at Oak Tree Elementary School. Currently I am excited to support grades 1 & 2 as Oak Tree's Reading Specialist. I am also the literacy coach for our staff.
As the Reading Specialist, I have the opportunity to support students in small groups outside of the classroom as they learn the reading and writing process. First and Second graders meet with me in my classroom four times a week during the school day. Each group is individualized so students read books and learn skills at the appropriate level to meet their needs. Since student's reading levels change throughout the year, your child's reading group and pull out time will also change throughout the year as I assess reading levels approximately every 5-6 weeks. We work on reading strategies, comprehension strategies, sight word knowledge, word work, and writing.
First and second graders in my reading program will be utilizing materials from the Leveled Literacy Intervention Program. This program was created by Fountas and Pinnell and focuses on small group intervention, providing direct instruction in the areas of phonics, word work, guided reading, and interactive writing. Students will take home a reading bag after each class, which contains a leveled reader and a short activity to complete at home. Please make sure these bags are returned each day.
I look forward to a fun-filled year ahead!
