Addition Strategies

COUNTING ON:    any number + 1, 2, or 3

 

(9+1=?    45+3=?   17+2=?)

                             Start at the greater number and count on.

 

ZERO FACTS:       any number plus zero

                             (4+0=4,  67+0=67)

 

DOUBLE FACTS:   two of the same numbers added together

                             ( 3+3=6,   6+6=12,   4+4=8,   5+5=10)

                             These facts should be memorized.

 

SUMS OF TEN:      These few facts should also be memorized.

                             ( 6+4=10,  4+6=10)

 

DOUBLE PLUS ONE FACTS:     Knowing that 4+4=8 might help a child know that 4+5=9.
